Wintershall Dea: Monte Carlo Simulation for Exploration Decisions
Wintershall Dea develops oil and gas reserves. yes!devs built an application that makes one of the industry's most expensive questions faster to answer: Is another drilling operation or the development of an area worthwhile?
Background
Exploration decisions depend on many uncertain factors. Geological parameters, costs and production volumes can only be given as ranges. It was precisely this uncertainty that the application was meant to make tangible and calculable.
What we did
We developed a Laravel application with Laravel Nova in the backend and pure TypeScript in the frontend. Inputs are entered flexibly: directly as a number with minimum, base and maximum value along with a chosen distribution, or via graphs. There, the user defines a curve using three pivot points, and the application automatically finds the matching formula that hits those points. All inputs and constraints are captured across three steps. A Monte Carlo simulation then runs: for each required variable, random values are drawn under the set conditions and the scenario is calculated. After around 1,000 runs, the result converges. From this, the application calculates probabilities such as P10, P50 and P90 and summarizes everything as a PDF with various views and graphs.
Result
Gut feeling and spreadsheets are turned into a transparent, probability-based basis for decisions that can be shared as a report.
